Ashanti and Nelly opened up about the woes of parenting their young son in their Peacock reality series, Nelly and Ashanti: We Belong Together.
The singer can’t fathom how Nelly can sleep peacefully throughout the night while their child, Kareem Kenkaide (KK), is crying incessantly.
In a now-viral clip from the show, the couple were discussing Nelly’s tour and Ashanti spending most of her time with KK. “The wife and mommy side of me is a little sad. You know, Daddy’s gonna be gone for a long time […] It’s just with the baby it’s a lot,” Ashanti noted.
Nelly replied, “Well, listen. It’s all you. I ain’t gonna even lie. You know, I ain’t got nothing for him.”
It then cut to a different clip, when the rapper confessed to Jermaine Dupri and others that he was bowing out of changing diapers and similar newborn factors.
“Until he can say, ‘I’m hungry,’ until he can say, ‘I need to use the bathroom,’ it’s gonna be a lot in [Ashanti’s] lap,” he stated. “But as soon as he starts walking, I told her, I said ‘Enjoy.’ ‘Cause as soon as he get to walking and talking, he with the crew,” Nelly continued.
In an interview with The Shade Room, Nelly confessed to being on “cruise control” when it comes to children, but confirmed that he provides full support to his wife and child’s needs.
“She knows I’m here. She knows she has the support,” he explained. “She knows whatever she needs, I provide, and that includes nannies.”
Fans, though, were not here for his stance. “She waited all these years to have a baby by a teenager,” one person commented. “This Nelly & Ashanti business is dare I say, ‘Foolish’,” another quipped.
Someone else tweeted, “Nelly and Ashanti singlehandedly destroyed all the good spin the block PR that was happening on this here app with just that one clip and I can’t thank them enough for it. Won’t he do it?!”
