New child-friendly reporting facility launched in Soweto

Police in Gauteng received a gender-based violence (GBV) and child-friendly reporting facility through the partnership between Matla-a-Bana and Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) on 1 July.

The Head of Department (HOD) of Community Safety, Nontsikelo Sisulu together with Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection, Major General Mbuso Khumalo received a gender-based violence (GBV) and child-friendly reporting facility which was donated and handed over by Matla-a-Bana (NGO) and Business Against Crime South Africa (BACSA) at the official launch event held at SAPS Protea Glen.

The newly launched facility will be utilised by Moroka Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit to enhance service delivery and ensure victims are not subjected to secondary trauma.

REPORTING FACILITITY SERVICE AREAS IN SOWETO

Moroka FCS services eight stations, namely Moroka, Jabulani, Naledi, Protea Glen, Lenasia South, Ennerdale, Dobsonville and Doornkop.

Matla a Bana and Business Leadership South Africa delegates hand over the facility to SAPS management.

Also in attendance was Ms Lizel van Eeden (Matla-a-Bana); CEO of Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), Ms Busisiwe Mavuso; Mr Fouché Burgers (BACSA); senior SAPS management and various other stakeholders.

According to Matla a Bana, Major Gen Khumalo Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection mentioned that females are the most victims (11482 GBV cases last quarter with 106 murder that were GBV related). He also thanked the FCS detectives for the work they do and said their dedication is appreciated.

“This special event was a highlight and a beacon of hope for the community and children of Soweto,” Matla a Bana, an NPO that serves as a voice against child abuse, reflected.
