After the announcements of the technical specifications of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, at the moment we still miss various information about the next generation consoles of Sony and Microsoft. Omdia research marketing analyst Steven Bailey was recently in an with the editors of the TrueAchievements website on next-gen consoles. During the chat, there was a talk about the price issue with which PS5 and Series X will arrive on the market.

Bailey believes that both Sony and Microsoft will want to avoid a delay in launch, due to the significant financial costs associated with the release of a new gaming console. “Launching a console costs billions, and planning can span years. The logistics involved are boggling, once you start to draw back the curtain even slightly around topics like marketing spend. They chose 2020 rather than 2021 for a reason: Because they know they need to get a new cycle of consoles into motion.”

PS5 and Xbox Series X will cost less than $500

Speaking of the price at which PS5 and Xbox Series X will be selling, according to Bailey, both next-generation consoles will not exceed $500. “Prices for both machines were obviously already lurking in the $400 – $500 region, and $500, in particular, is such a major psychological hurdle that I think we’ll see manufacturers absorb any extra costs rather than risk crossing that. Getting people onto the platform matters more than making them spend in the short-term. It’s their long-term custom that makes money.”
