Nothing lasts forever, and the dynamic between rappers is no exception to that popular phrase. Redman recently spoke about his current relationship with Method Man and his peers.
The 54-year-old rapper appeared on the Julian Dorey Podcast and was asked if he still hangs out with his legendary duo member. “Hell no!” he said emphatically, but it wasn’t with a malicious tone. “We do shows and we come back home. I don’t hang out with a lot of rappers at all. This is work, this is home. We’re very inclusive with our movement. Once we’re off the road, we’re like, ‘Alright. You got family to deal with, I got sh*t I gotta do.’ My circle is very small. So we all have different lives.”
The Newark, NJ artist stated that he may call his peers on the phone every so often, but as far as spending time physically, he is very selective. “The only artists I hang out with is my boy DoItAll from Lords of The Underground and Treach if I see him in the hood and that’s about it. And Kid Capri,” he added. “Kid Capri is my big bro. I talk to him and go see him all the time. But he’s not a rapper though. He’s a DJ. One of the best.”
While Redman and Method Man may not be kicking it, the former believes their lyrical chemistry is still there. Red told Red Bull last year that he wants to add another chapter to their Blackout! series. “I want to do a Blackout! 3,” he said. “Maybe like 12 songs.”
Unfortunately, Meth’s focus was on other ventures. “We are not even focused on no Blackouts! or any of that sh*t right now,” he said. “Brother, we are focused on this TV and movie stuff and producing, as well. We’ve got to get these stories out there.”
Their debut joint album Blackout! came out in 1999, reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, and eventually went platinum. The follow-up came out 10 years later and also landed within the top 10 of the Billboard 200. Fans may have to wait a bit longer for the third edition, but given its success and resonance, it could very well be worth it.
