Roddy Ricch is gearing up for his first release of 2025, but it isn’t exactly what people want from him. The 26-year-old artist announced his upcoming single, “Underdog,” which will be featured in the F1 movie soundtrack.
The Compton multi-talent shared a short video of himself posing in front of a DJ booth with the Apple Music logo on the front. In the background, a snippet of “Underdog” played where he raps “100 large/ I want them gold wraps/ Put it up, double R/ Big dog, big dog, big dog/ Poppin’ out, sayin’ I ain’t great.” At the end of the video, the text displays his name, the song title, and indicates that the song will be available this Friday (June 13).
Ricch’s “Underdog” will join records featuring Don Toliver, Doja Cat, Burna Boy, Sexyy Red, Ed Sheeran, and other acts on the F1 soundtrack, which will be out the same day the film hits theaters on June 27. While it should be exciting that the Grammy winner is finally making a splash this year, it is no secret that he has struggled a bit in gaining traction since his 2021 sophomore album, Live Life Fast. Even his 2022 mixtape, Feed Tha Streets III, landed a bit softly on the market.
People are invested in seeing Roddy Ricch have a proper comeback and remind the world what he can do, which he showed on his 2019 debut album, Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial. Thus, the comments on his Instagram post were focused on one thing.
“Confused where the album at,” one fan wrote. “This ain’t the album we was looking forward [to] bruh,” another fan wrote. “Bro drop the album stop bringing scary, done changed the date 3 times im tryna hear your comeback,” a third user commented. “Sheesh bro really fell off sh*t sad,” another user added. “Album ain’t neva gonna drop bro smh,” one more fan said.
In Roddy’s defense, the release date for his upcoming LP, The Navy Album, has been publicly shared for months. His third studio album is set to drop on July 18, 2025, and he has already shared a few singles. “Lonely Road,” featuring Terrace Martin, came out in December 2024, and “Survivor’s Remorse” came out in May 2024. He also shared “911” in June 2024, though that is not listed on the official tracklist on Apple Music or Wikipedia.
Unfortunately for the “Late At Night” artist, these records haven’t picked up any real steam as none have appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. “Survivor’s Remorse” peaked at No. 33 on the US R&B/Hip-Hop chart and No. 4 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, but never broke through.
His biggest chart placement in years was his feature on Kendrick Lamar’s “Dodger Blue,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. Still, the people are invested, and perhaps “Underdog” will be a mantra for what The Navy Album ultimately does come July. In the meantime, listen to “Survivor’s Remorse” above.
