Penned after frontman Johni Holiday’s brief stint in a mental wellness facility, Ruff Majik’s latest single “Elektrik Ram” is both a sonic assault and a cool-headed commentary on picking yourself back up.
Against their characteristic balls-to-the-wall fervour, fuzzed out guitars and muffled vocals follow an opening House on Haunted Hill soundbyte. Blistering energy carries through, fuelled by racing drums and rollicking layered guitar. It was written on acoustic guitar by Holiday and it’s a mark on Ruff Majik’s stoner rock prowess that the final result is as fevered and affecting as it is.
This same relentless energy backs up Holiday’s extended commentary on the lessons learned on a hospital bed and his overarching realisation that “fate will not grant you any favours, you must take them”. Really what he’s delivering here is a message of encouragement to those grappling with their mental health – with the reminder of the power of picking up where you left off and trying for round two.
“Elektrik Ram” comes ahead of the band’s upcoming album and is a searing reminder that the heavy rock scene is still well alive and kicking hard.
