Fat Joe is grappling with the immense loss of his beloved mother just three months after the passing of his father, and six months following the death of his older brother Angel.
The Bronx rapper took to Instagram over the weekend to share a heartfelt tribute, posting a carousel of photos of his mother, Marie Del-Carmen Cartagena, 77. In his emotional message, he expressed a deep sorrow while reflecting on the love and sacrifices his mom made throughout her life.
“This a real one, rest in peace to the woman who brought me into this world,” he wrote, recalling how his mother, despite not having much, gave everything to her family. “She didn’t have much but she gave us everything. Anyone who knows my mom knows she had a heart of gold. She refused to move out the projects for many years, even though I had money. She loved her community, she loved her people, Ms. Ruby, the Terror Squad Queen.”
Fat Joe went on to share how proud his mom was of everyone in his crew, frequently asking about her extended family within the Terror Squad: Remy, Khaled, Rich, and Terrell. He also reflected on how her passing felt intertwined with the loss of his father. “Truth is, she died of a broken heart,” he declared. “60 years with a man and he recently just died. My dad wanted her with him.”
In his post, Joe also thanked the families who supported him during this difficult time, including the Castro, Cartagena, and Delgado families. He closed the emotional tribute with a touching promise to his mother: “Mommy, till I see you again, you were my world, my heart, my everything. I’ll continue to make you proud.”
