Tamar Braxton and Tricky Stewart are still making magic together after nearly 30 years, as heard on her new single, “You On You.”
Exclusively premiering with VIBE, we spoke with the singer about the record’s inception and the pettiest you-on-you move she’s ever pulled.
“You can’t ask me that because I’m a Pisces. I’m going to hell with it. That’s my problem. Blame it on my parents for my Zodiac sign,” Braxton quipped. However, when it comes to her being petty, a standout memory includes “going to the same place at the same time [as someone] and I’m balling somebody.”
The mother of one joked, “It’d be like that sometimes, don’t it? You can watch yourself in action.”

With “You On You,” Braxton is “embracing the strength it takes to use your voice in any relationship that isn’t serving your best interest.” The single stems from a project that is about one person, but for her— she doesn’t “speak about the dead.”
The 48-year-old explained, “I went through a really hard heartbreak and probably the worst experience of my adult life. I haven’t had a lot of adult relationships. But the worst heartbreak that I’ve ever encountered because it was just betrayal. It was lies. It was cheating. It was everything you could think of. It was abandonment; it was everything. And it was just very, very easy for me to identify with all of the records and put my personality and my heartbreak [on them].
Braxton continued, “This is what we’ve come up with and I love it. I feel like every female knows this album.”
In addition to her new music, she’s topping R&B charts with her Eric Benét duet, touring with October London, back on reality TV with her mother for Cooking Sessions with Tamar & Ms. E, and giving her TaMartians exclusive access to experience the EP first during her meet-and-greets.
She remained tight-lipped about other collaborations on the project, but shared, “Everyone knows this album. Everyone has felt this album. This album is very much needed in today, especially how gone to hell the dating scene is. It’s everyone’s album; it’s not just mine.”
From working on The Braxtons’ first demo when they were signed to LaFace to now, Tamar and Tricky have finally linked up to make an entire project together— which is slated to drop this summer.
