Tyler, The Creator and Massive Attack were pulled from the Sunday (April 6) lineup of the AXE Ceremonia music festival in Mexico City following a devastating accident that claimed the lives of two photographers and prompted the cancellation of the event’s final day.
The tragedy unfolded on Saturday (April 5) when powerful winds toppled a crane that was supporting a decorative metal fixture at the festival site. The falling structure struck two people — identified as photographers Miguel Ángel Rojas and Berenice Giles — who were immediately treated at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save them, both succumbed to their injuries.
“With deep sadness, we confirm the passing of the two people who were injured during today’s incident,” AXE Ceremonia organizers shared in a public statement. “We are deeply heartbroken by this loss. We are reaching out to their families to support them during this incredibly difficult time and to provide them with all our care and solidarity. The safety of our community has always been our priority, and we continue, as from the very beginning, to maintain close collaboration and complete transparency with the authorities.”
Though the festival carried on Saturday night with scheduled performances from Charli XCX and K-pop group Tomorrow X Together, the mood was undoubtedly somber. By the following morning, both organizers and Mexico City’s mayor’s office confirmed that the remainder of the festival — including highly anticipated performances by Tyler, The Creator and Massive Attack — had been called off out of respect for the victims and in light of safety concerns.
What was meant to be a weekend of celebration has now become a harrowing memory overshadowed by tragedy and loss.
