Wendy Williams is at the center of a new jaw-dropping documentary that dives into her alleged ongoing battle with alcoholism and autonomy.
The hour-long special Trapped: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams? premiered on Monday (May 19) on the ID Channel and wasted no time getting into the life of the former talk show host, who is currently under guardianship. The 60-year-old legend is residing at a New York City assisted living facility, but according to the new doc, she was relocated after celebrating her birthday with drinks and city views from the rooftop bar of the building.
“Wendy was on the third floor in this care unit, where she has access to the hallways, to the elevators,” Journalist Diane Dimond alleged. “And on her birthday, she decided to get in the elevator and see where she could go. Well, it went all the way up to the rooftop bar, and it being her birthday, she ordered a drink, and then another one, and another. Who knows how many, but she will admit to you that she got drunk, she had a relapse.”
Her celebration allegedly led to her being moved to a restrictive memory care unit on a different floor, where she is now under 24/7 supervision unless granted permission to leave.
The new revelation echoes Wendy admitting to “celebrating” her 60th birthday during a call-in with The View this past March. Wendy acknowledged celebrating her milestone last summer but emphasized that she is currently alcohol-free. She told the hosts her relationship with substances is “fine and wonderful” and added that she’s “easily going on with [her] life, alcohol-free.”
Earlier this year, Wendy spoke out about her health and conservatorship after her court-appointed guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, filed a request for a brand new round of medical evaluations. That request was echoed in a court filing that emphasized the need for “renewed careful consideration by qualified experts” when it comes to assessing Wendy’s capacity to make decisions about her own life.
Afterward, Wendy declared to the public that she had “passed” all her hospital exams “with flying colors.” However, Morrissey stated that Wendy never actually completed the court-ordered testing, claiming she declined to participate. “I don’t know anything about that,” Wendy responded to the claims via People. “Bullsh*t. I am open to what I am open to, and I can’t talk about it right now,” she added.
Trapped also includes several medical experts who each weighed in on whether her symptoms point to frontotemporal dementia (FTD) — which she was diagnosed with in 2023 — or alcohol-induced cognitive decline, which a brain disorder specialist bluntly called “the second most common cause of dementia.”
Wendy’s team has not yet responded to the documentary’s claims. Trapped: What Is Happening To Wendy Williams? is steaming now. See the trailer below.
