Popular media personality and social commentator, Daddy Freeze, has stirred controversy online with a new video in which he directly questioned Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over an alleged past link to the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha.

The video, which has since gone viral on social media, saw Daddy Freeze addressing claims by Obi’s supporters that he harbours hatred for the former Anambra State governor.

In the clip, Daddy Freeze challenged Obi’s credibility by asking, “What was your role in late Abacha’s administration?”

The question referenced a resurfaced video where Obi appeared to speak about his involvement during the Abacha era, prompting Freeze to express doubt about the transparency of Obi’s political record.

The issue has revived a long-standing debate over the extent of Obi’s connection to Nigeria’s military past. Critics argue that any form of involvement with the Abacha government contradicts Obi’s public image as a democratic reformer.

Obi’s camp had earlier maintained that he never held any government position during the military era. According to them, the only interaction Obi had with the Abacha administration was when he was temporarily appointed to a short-term advocacy committee set up to decongest Nigerian ports.

This, they said, followed a formal petition he submitted on port inefficiencies. The assignment reportedly lasted less than four months and involved no formal employment or political appointment.

The clarification also dismissed claims that Obi worked for the Nigerian Ports Authority, stressing that his involvement was purely consultative. Despite this, some observers including Daddy Freeze remain sceptical, especially given the broader context of Nigeria’s tumultuous military era.

As Peter Obi continues to position himself for future political contests, questions like these are expected to follow him closely, especially as the electorate increasingly demands full transparency from public office seekers.

The exchange further highlights the scrutiny prominent Nigerians face in the age of social media, where past statements and affiliations continue to resurface and shape public perception.
