National Women’s Day is celebrated annually on 9 August. It is the anniversary of the great women’s march of 1956. On that day, about 2,000 women marched to the Union Buildings to protest the carrying of passbooks by Black women in urban areas.
Even today, women continue to fight against oppression and for the equal rights of all humans.
To celebrate the day and the strength of women, there are several events happening in the country. Let’s look at those happening in and around Durban.
Totalsports Women’s Race Durban
Start your Women’s Day celebration by taking part in the Totalsports Women’s Race happening at Kings Park Athletics Track. The race is aimed at raising awareness around breast cancer.
It starts at 10 am and there are exclusive T-shirts for all entrants and exclusive finishers’ bracelets.

I do the woman’s day event in conjunction with the cups for cancer drive in memory of my late dad and I’m also a cancer survivor. All proceeds for the Day goes to CANSA Cancer Association of South Africa,” says organiser Roshni Naicker of Donlee Creations.
