Last Saturday (Feb. 15) before watching the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, an audience swarmed Hennessy Arena in San Francisco to see four of the WNBA‘s brightest stars take the court in a 2×2 exhibition. The full day of events in the city’s downtown at City Hall merged NBA and WNBA fandom with music, culture, and of course cocktails with a live DJ, giveaways, a fully-stocked bar, and more.
Ahead of the main event, attendees were privy to a courtside conversation between NBA legend Baron Davis and media personality Tone Kapone which explored the intersection of basketball, culture, and community. After the discussion ended, Hip-Hop, pop, and R&B tunes amplified the energy of the covered, outdoor venue welcoming guests to shoot their shot for a chance at exclusive swag bags.
Following the high-energy contest, the afternoon continued with music, dancing, and Hennyritas poured by Victoria Monét, who filled in as a special guest bartender.
The lively crowd kept the cheerful energy as WNBA stars DiJonai Carrington and Arike Ogunbowale took on Jackie Young and Chelsea Grey. A’ja Wilson served as host, providing live, comedic commentary as her peers laced up for competition.
“It took a little bit of time to warm up a little bit, but it was fun. The music and the crowd was into it, so it was nice,” detailed Grey to VIBE after the fast-paced game.
Carrington and Ogunbowale came out on top in the end, coming back after being down in points a majority of the matchup. The pairing marked the first time the two played together as teammates, but not the last as Carrington was recently traded to the Dallas Wings where Ogunbowale has played guard since 2019.
“I’m excited to play with her this year, and we’re going to make some noise this year,” explained Ogunbowale after their quick moment on court.
“It was cool,” added Carrington in a separate conversation. “Look, sometimes I just want to stand there and watch her cook. That’s where she’s in her element. So, it was fun to play with each other, though. And play off each other. Let each other cook and do what we do.”
