The cause of death for a 28-year-old woman who died hours after Brazilian Butt Lift surgery has been revealed. According to NBC Miami, Ahmonique Miller died of acute combined drug toxicity after she received unregulated medication at an unlicensed recovery house. The medical examiner’s report found a mix of the prescription painkiller oxycodone and an unregulated drug, called bromazolam, in Miller’s system.
NBC reported “the use of these drugs in the hours following [Ahmonique’s] procedure are responsible for the fatal outcome.”
Initially, Ahmonique Miller and her sister Kiera Barnes traveled to Miami to get plastic surgery in March. Both women underwent procedures at the Avana plastic surgery clinic. Following the surgery, the women traveled to a business reportedly advertised as Keyla’s Recovery House, where the owner, Keyla Oliver, distributed medication. According to the report, Oliver informed investigators that she had given Ahmonique two Percocet pills.
Oliver is not licensed to practice medicine, and according to Ahmonique’s mother, Wakeelah Miller, “her actual prescription was never picked up from the pharmacy.”
Ahmonique’s sister, Kiera, told law enforcement that Oliver gave Ahmonique an unknown amount of muscle relaxers from her prescription and two Percocets from “an unlabeled pill bottle” because Ahmonique’s “medication was not ready.”
“I never thought that I would be putting together obituaries for my daughter, for my child,” shared Wakeelah Miller. “She was smart, extremely smart. She was beautiful…Just a big loss.”
According to PEOPLE Magazine, Ahmonique Miller was “put to bed for rest” between 12:00 p.m. and 1 p.m., and at approximately 9:30 p.m., when she had not woken up, staff checked on her, and after finding her “unresponsive,” they called 911. The official police report confirmed her time of death as 10:26 p.m., and described the facility as “an illegal post-plastic-surgery recovery home.”
Ahmonique Miller is survived by her family, including her mother, sister, and 1-year-old daughter. Her mother has launched an online petition for laws against unlicensed recovery homes operating in South Florida.
