Drug trafficking: NDLEA issues stern warning to transporters, courier companies

The Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Tuesday vowed to crack down on commuters and courier companies involved in trafficking of illicit drugs.

Commander of the NDLEA, Enugu State command, Dr. Anthony Nkem gave the caution at Peace Mass Transit, PMT, headquarters, Emene, Enugu State during a one-day seminar organised by the company in partnership with the agency.

Nkem, who lauded PMT for organising the seminar, titled “Implication of illicit drug trafficking through postal/courier companies operators”, stated that it would help NDLEA in fighting drug war in the society.

He expressed the hope that at the end of the seminar, the companies would know those drugs that have been outlawed to avoid being deceived by the dealers.

Concerning the level of technological level of illicit drug trafficking in the country, Nkem said that unless you have a smarter knowledge about illicit drugs, the dealers could deceive courier companies.

“Dealers use courier companies to do this drug trafficking and some of these companies are ignorant of their responsibilities. Companies should not allow themselves to be used as an avenue to facilitate illegality or criminality.

“Illicit drug are drugs that science has confirmed to be dangerous to health and cannot be taken without the recommendation of the physicians.

“We also discovered that people into this drug trafficking business are desperate and can do all manner of disguise to the extent that they will fool the courier companies because they are ignorant of their strategies. Unless you have smarter knowledge of these drugs, the dealers can put wool in their eyes and confuse you,” he noted.

In an open address by the Vice chairman of PMT, Mrs Emelia Onyishi commended the NDLEA for deeming it fit to partner the PMT in ensuring that the scourge of illicit drug was curbed.

Mrs Onyishi who promised that PMT company would go a long way in helping to eradicate illicit drug trafficking in the country, warned that any staff found guilty after the seminar would lose their job.

She urged all the participants, drawn from across all PMT branches in the country, to save the nation from illicit drug trafficking.

During a lecture by the principal staff officer of NDLEA, Mr Eyeuche Ome, he disclosed that transporters and courier companies had become distributing agents for illicit drug traffickers in the country, though most time ignorantly.
