Paul Tazewell made history on Sunday (March 2) at the 2025 Oscars as he accepted the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked. With the win, Tazewell is the first Black man to ever take the category. He is only the second Black person to win in that category overall, with Ruth E. Carter as the first in 2029 for Black Panther.

“I’m the first Black man to receive the costume design award… I’m so proud of this,” shared Tazewell from center stage. “My Ozian muses, Cynthia [Erivo] and Ariana [Grande], I love you so much – all the other cast, thank you thank you thank you, for trusting me with bringing your characters to life. This is everything. Director Jon M. Chu and producer [Marc Platt], thank you.”

Additional nominees at the 2025 Oscars included Colman Domingo, Cynthia Erivo, RaMell Ross, and more.

Zoe Saldaña also earned the first Academy award of her career for her role in Emilia Pérez. She makes history as the first Dominican American to accept an Oscar.

“My mom is here. My whole family is here. I am floored by this honor,” Saldaña said through tears while accepting her award. “To my cast and my crew of Emilia Pérez, I’m sharing this award with you.”

She continued, “My grandmother came to this country in 1961. I am a proud child of immigrant parents with dreams and dignity and hard working hands. I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy award and I know I won’t be the last.”

The full show featured performances from Doja Cat, RAYE, and a tribute to Quincy Jones by Queen Latifah.

Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the 2025 Oscars were live broadcasted from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC and streamed live on Hulu. Read below for a full list of winners at the 2025 Oscars Awards so far.
