In a candid and nostalgic interview with SA Hip Hop MagBig Zulu paid tribute to South African hip hop’s finest by revealing his Top 10 SA Rappers of All Time — a list packed with lyrical giants, fallen legends, and culture-shifting icons.

Known for his traditional Zulu flair and commanding presence on the mic, Big Zulu’s list is a reflection of both personal influence and cultural impact. The rapper emphasized that these are the artists who “built the foundation, moved the people, and told our stories with heart and skill.”

Here’s Big Zulu’s top 10, in no particular order:

1. Pro (Linda Mkhize)

A true pioneer of kasi rap, Pro’s influence on South African hip hop remains unmatched. Big Zulu called him “the voice of the streets” and credited Pro for making vernac rap cool and powerful.

2. AKA (Kiernan Forbes)

Zulu praised the late AKA’s “musical genius, consistency and ability to fuse hip hop with melody without losing the bars.” He described Supa Mega as one of the most complete artists the country has ever produced.

3. Kwesta

Respected for his lyricism and deep, raspy tone, Kwesta made it onto Zulu’s list for his authenticity and street-rooted storytelling. “He raps like a man who has lived every word,” Zulu said.

4. Cassper Nyovest

Despite their occasional tension, Big Zulu gave Cassper his flowers for his role in pushing hip hop into the mainstream. “You can’t talk SA hip hop without mentioning Cassper. He opened doors,” Zulu acknowledged.

5. Zakwe

A close collaborator and lyrical powerhouse, Zakwe’s raw talent and Zulu pride earned him a firm place on the list. Zulu referred to him as “a soldier of words, respected by real rappers.”

6. HHP (Jabulani Tsambo)

Big Zulu honoured the late HHP as a cultural bridge-builder. “He showed us it’s okay to rap in our languages. He walked so we could run,” he said, praising HHP’s Tswana pride and versatility.

7. Flabba

Remembered for his charisma, humour, and clever wordplay, Flabba remains a cult favourite. Zulu described him as “one of the most naturally gifted lyricists we’ve seen.”

8. K.O

With a career spanning decades and numerous reinventions, K.O is still a relevant force. Big Zulu called him “a master of evolution,” applauding his ability to remain fresh while staying true to his roots.

9. Duncan

Zulu’s long-time collaborator and fellow Durban heavyweight, Duncan earned his spot for his pen game and hard-hitting lyrics. “He raps with pain, with pride, and with purpose,” Zulu said.

10. Riky Rick

Ending the list on a poignant note, Zulu honoured the late Riky Rick for his visionary style and influence. “Riky wasn’t just a rapper, he was a movement,” he said. “He inspired so many to dream beyond music.”

This list sparked plenty of debate among fans, but one thing is clear — Big Zulu’s picks reflect deep respect for the culture, legacy, and language of South African hip hop. It’s a tribute not only to lyrical prowess but also to the emotional and cultural connection these artists have built with audiences across generations.

Who would you add to the list? Let the barbershop debates begin.
