Damson Idris recently responded to a fan with a touch of sarcasm after being speculated to have declined the role of Black Panther. The Hollywood actor subtly dismissed the claim with a witty remark, as well as addressed other rumored roles.
“@DamsonIdris purportedly turned down the role of Black Panther. He would have been perfect for it too. Oh well,” a fan wrote on X prompting Idris to respond, “Yes sir. I turned down 007, a co-lead film with Daniel Day-Lewis and an Eddie Murphy biopic too [upside down smiley emoji.”
As many didn’t know what to believe, some were quick to call out his sarcasm. See below.
“Sarcasm doesn’t come across well on social media but this is f**king hilarious loooooool,” responded one user as another joked, “I heard you turned down Bad Boys 5 too.”
Rumors have swirled in recent months regarding potential casting decisions for the next installation of Black Panther. Reportedly, Idris was one of three actors who allegedly declined the role of Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman). The other names speculated to have passed on the opportunity include David Oyelowo and John Boyega.
Idris’ mention of an Eddie Murphy biopic adds another layer to his comment, as he previously expressed his desire to portray the legendary comedian in a 2022 interview with Good Morning America.
“I would love to play Eddie Murphy,” he said at the time. “When I was a kid I used to watch Eddie Murphy’s RAW and Delirious. His story is remarkable.”
Beyond the Marvel rumors, Idris has been busy in Hollywood as he’s starring alongside Brad Pitt in the upcoming Formula 1 film F1, directed by Joseph Kosinski. Reflecting on the experience, Idris shared a moment of awe from his first day on set at the 2023 British Grand Prix.
“I look to my left, it’s Brad Pitt. I look to my right, it’s Javier Bardem,” he told Vanity Fair for their July 2024 cover. “I look at my hands, they’re shaking. And we shoot all of this epic stuff, and all the amazing drivers are there, from Lewis [Hamilton] to [Max] Verstappen to everyone.”
Speaking of Pitt, Idris added, “Talk about a superstar. His humility is second to none. I don’t know if people know this, but he is really good behind that car. Really good. Too good almost. He makes me nervous how good he is.”
While Idris may not be stepping into the Black Panther suit anytime soon, fans can only hope that one day he will be considered for the iconic Marvel role.
F1 releases in theaters on June 25.
