Doechii earned her latest career milestone after her critically-acclaimed project, Alligator Bites Never Heal, was named Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (Feb. 2).

The rapper, whose album beat out releases from fellow nominees J. Cole, Common & Pete Rock, Future & Metro Boomin, and Eminem, took the stage at the Crypto.com Arena to accept the award, delivering a heartfelt speech with her team in tow.

“I don’t wanna make this long,” Doechii began, before noting that she’s only the third female rap artist to win Best Rap Album since the category was introduced in 1989.

“Two women have won,” the 26-year-old said, mentioning previous Best Rap Album recipient Cardi B, as well as Lauryn Hill, although the latter won as part of the rap group Fugees.

Doechii spoke of the hard work put into the making of Alligator Bites Never Heal, as well as her dedication to sobriety, which she feels God rewarded her for by allowing her to experience the success she’s received over the past year.

Listing her mother, record label, engineer, and fans, Doechii explained the reasoning behind calling herself “The Swamp Princess,” attributing the moniker to her Tampa, Florida roots while speaking on the vibrance of the city and the musical talent there.

The Top Dawg Entertainment artist then gave a message to the Black girls and Black women watching at home, insisting that “anything is possible” and dismissing stereotypes regarding their skin tone and mannerisms.

In addition to winning her first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, Doechii was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance, losing out to Chappell Roan and “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, respectively.

The “NISSAN ALTIMA” artist also took the stage for her debut Grammy performance, making the evening as a whole a shining moment for the rising star.
