Pop Smoke Killer Sentenced To 29 Years In Prison

Pop Smoke‘s killer has officially been sentenced to 29 years in prison. For his role in the killing, Rolling Stone reports that Corey Walker pleaded guilty to home invasion robbery with a gun, gang enhancement, and voluntary manslaughter. The 24-year-old apologized to Smoke’s family in court, expressing remorse for his actions and regretting the life of the rapper, whose real name is Bashar Barakah Jackson.

“Even though the Jackson family isn’t here in court today, I would like to sincerely apologize for my unforgivable actions, although there’s no apology that amounts to the taking of someone’s life,” Walker said during the sentencing on Friday (Feb. 21). “I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize to my family for the pain and embarrassment that they have endured over the last five years, as well as an apology to my community.”

“Today I take responsibility for my dreadful partake in these crimes, and as I begin my road to rehabilitation, I assure you that I will steer clear from negative behavior,” he concluded.

Earlier in February, Walker struck a plea deal and explained how the murder happened. Corey stated that he and three other men ambushed the rapper while he was showering at an Airbnb. Walker was the oldest of the four men, with the other accomplices being 15, 16, and 17 during the time.

Corey Walker explained that he wasn’t the shooter and instructed the three other men not to use a firearm to attack Pop Smoke and instead utilize a “flower vase.” “It was only after the robbers exited the house and reentered the vehicle that [Walker] learned of the shooting,” the court filing reads, per the outlet. “In response, [Walker] assaulted the shooter.”
