TriStar Pictures has announced early development on a sequel to One of Them Days, the breakout comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA. The two leads are expected to reprise their roles, along with the film’s original creative team. Plot details have not yet been revealed.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, One of Them Days debuted back in January and became a box office success, grossing over $50,000,000 globally. According to Variety, the film also performed well on streaming, landing on Netflix’s Top 10 for three consecutive weeks. Critically, it earned a 94 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The story follows Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), best friends and roommates living in South Los Angeles, who scramble to avoid eviction after discovering Alyssa’s boyfriend spent their rent money just hours before Dreux is scheduled for a major job interview. The cast also includes Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Gabrielle Dennis, and more.
The project was produced by Issa Rae’s Hoorae Media and Macro Film Studios, with additional production support from ColorCreative. Reportedly, it was developed through the CoCre Lab at Sony Pictures, a partnership with ColorCreative in 2018 to support emerging screenwriters from underrepresented backgrounds. Singleton’s original script titled The Jungles was one of four projects selected for development through the lab.
Singleton, who also served as a writer on HBO’s Insecure and showrunner for Rap Sh!t, worked on multiple drafts of the script before Palmer signed on to the film. Once SZA joined the cast and the project moved to TriStar, development was greenlit.
“It was just like, ‘Wow, they really let us shoot a movie in the Jungles,’” she said per outlet, reflecting on the experience of filming in the South L.A. neighborhood where the story is set. “I never take it for granted when something that I’ve written becomes a real project.”
