Tensions were already high ahead of a much-anticipated lightweight title bout when one fighter crossed a line that shocked even the most hardened fans of the sport.
In a move widely condemned as racially insensitive, a white boxer, Denys Berinchykm, sent his Black opponent, Keyshawn Davis, a package of bananas and a watermelon in the days leading up to their match—a gesture many interpreted as a blatant act of racist provocation.
Davis, incensed, would lambast Berinchyk upon receiving the package, vowing to pummel the Ukranian upon meeting him in the ring.
And when the bell rang for the February 2025 bout, Davis kept that promise, delivering a vicious beating of Berinchyk, channeling the insult into a devastating performance.

In what was Davis’ first shot at a major championship title, he delivered a clinic in precision and power, ultimately finishing the fight with a brutal knockout that left no doubt who was the superior man in the ring.
The victory earned Davis the WBO lightweight title in only his 14th fight, tying him with Hall of Fame boxer Oscar De La Hoya for the third-fewest fights needed to win a lightweight world title.

The bout marked a significant milestone in Davis’ career, solidifying his emergence as one of boxing’s brightest young stars and setting him up for future showdowns with the top prospects in the 135 -pound weight division.
Meanwhile, Berinchyk’s actions sparked backlash online and in boxing circles, with many calling for disciplinary action and condemning the behavior as disgraceful and out of step with the values of the sport.
