In a candid interview with L-Tido, South African rapper Cassper Nyovest opened up about his long-standing rivalry with the late Kiernan “AKA” Forbes, revealing that AKA was the only artist who truly challenged him and made him question his own abilities.

When asked whether his motivation for making music had waned since AKA’s passing, Cassper responded:

“AKA was the only guy that actually gave me a run for my money. That’s the guy who gave me problems, that’s the guy who made me second guess myself. That’s the guy I used to worry about. Me and AKA were Chiefs and Pirates. What is true in that statement is the only guy who used to worry me is no more. Everyone else I don’t fear. He was a worthy competitor. He has given me big blows.”

Cassper recounted how AKA’s diss track “Composure” had a profound impact on him, admitting that it gave him sleepless nights and made him question his own artistry. He described how the song affected him deeply, even causing strain in his personal relationships due to the anger and frustration it stirred.

Despite their tumultuous relationship, Cassper acknowledged the significance of their rivalry in shaping his career and the South African hip-hop landscape. He revealed that they had recorded music together that remains unreleased, and he had hoped to reconcile with AKA through a boxing match, believing that such an encounter could have led to mutual respect and possibly friendship.

Reflecting on AKA’s death, Cassper expressed the difficulty he faced in processing the loss, stating that it was a sensitive matter that required careful consideration before speaking publicly. He emphasized the impact their rivalry had on the music industry, noting that together they carried and transformed South African hip-hop.

Cassper’s reflections highlight the complexity of their relationship—a blend of competition, respect, and unfulfilled reconciliation. His candidness offers a glimpse into the personal and professional dynamics that defined one of South Africa’s most notable musical rivalries.
