Dawn Robinson added further insight to her decision to live in her vehicle in a new interview. The R&B singer discussed the “freedom” in her unconventional lifestyle and described her situation as “a very healing time.”
Speaking with PEOPLE Magazine, the En Vogue singer shared the circumstances that resulted in her living in her car. She explained her decision to move out from her parents’ home in Las Vegas due to a situation with her mother. She then moved to Los Angeles and resided in a hotel as she searched for an apartment. After an unsuccessful apartment hunt, the 58-year-old decided she would “take control of my situation” and has lived in her car since 2022.
“I’m proud of what I’ve done,” she exclaimed to the outlet. “Every day, I have to make this work, and I have done it quite well.”
Robinson continued, “Car life, until you’re in it, you don’t know the freedom of what it is.”
The singer described, “It’s really just every day having to go into the gym and shower there as opposed to just walking into your own bathroom at home,” and continued to share, “It’s also not being able to cook,” as she explained she eats at restaurants daily.
Elsewhere in the conversation, the R&B artist reflected on how living on wheels has transformed her mentally. She also confirmed she receives support from a former mother-in-law, as well as her friend, sister-slash-assistant.
“This is a very healing time for me. I literally pray a lot. I talk to God. I cry about my mother. I get a lot of that out because I have to heal that part of me,” revealed the Lucy Pearl member. “When I build my career to where I want it to be, and when I have a resurgence of my career, that’s when I’ll decide that it’s going to be enough of my car life, and I will be in my house or my apartment.”

Fans became aware of Robinson’s situation last month when she shared a vlog on her YouTube channel. In the clip, she noted that she is not the first celebrity musician to have lived in their cars during their respective journeys, naming Marvin Gaye in her description.
After the video began to make rounds on social media, Jermaine Dupri posed questions regarding Robinson’s finances as she employed a personal assistant. In his own video, the Atlanta native declared, “She’s definitely not broke saying she got an assistant,” as alleged fundraisers in her name were rumored to be circulating.
“I’ve been made aware that some individuals may be requesting funds on my behalf through platforms like Cash App, GoFundMe, or other means,” Robinson followed up. “I want to be clear: I have not authorized any fundraising campaigns, and I do not want anyone — especially my loyal fans — to be scammed or taken advantage of.”
