Jonathan Majors‘ comeback is here as Briarcliff Entertainment in conjunction with Zeus Films shares the trailer for the formerly-shelved film, Magazine Dreams. The chilling film hits theaters on March 21.
Majors stars as Killian Maddox, a man — described by Entertainment Weekly as “isolated and oftentimes volatile” — consumed by dreams of becoming a famous bodybuilder while struggling to find human connection. “You have to do something big and important, or no one will remember you when you’re dead,” he says in the trailer.
The official synopsis reads: “[Killian] battles both the limits of his physical body and his own inner demons” with the film exploring the “lengths one man will go in his haunting quest for recognition in a world that often overlooks him.”
Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, the film also stars Harrison Page as Killian’s debilitating veteran grandfather whom he cares for, alongside Taylour Paige, Haley Bennett, and bodybuilder Mike O’Hearn.
It garnered critical acclaim after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023 and won its U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award. The win sparked a bidding war with Searchlight emerging as the victor with the distribution rights. However, the company dropped the film after Majors was convicted of domestic assault and harassment against ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.
He was given probation and mandatory orders to attend 52 weeks of a domestic violence intervention program.
“Elijah’s film made a well-deserved splash in Sundance and Briarcliff is looking forward to taking his story to the big screen across the country in early 2025,” Briarcliff’s CEO Tom Ortenberg said in a statement, per Variety.
Speaking on Majors’ performance, Ortenberg added, “Jonathan Majors’ transcendent performance as Killian Maddox will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most compelling and transformative roles in recent cinema history. We are honored to bring this extraordinary work to theaters nationwide, inviting audiences to witness a story that will resonate long after the credits roll.”
