Michaela Jaé is prepared to dance on her own in her latest R&B-pop single “Two To Tango.” In the music video, released on Friday (June 20) ahead of her scheduled headline performance at San Francisco Pride later this month, the Golden Globe-winning star takes the spotlight. Co-directed by Jon Sams and Michael Ian, the focus is shifted from a sexy, soft, black-and-white to an edgy, glamorous costuming accentuated by colorful lighting and choreography.
As described in a statement, the visual explores “the sensuality and duality of desire by embodying two strikingly different personas, bringing the emotional tension of the track to life.”
Michaela Jaé co-wrote the groovy track with producer Nick Smith. The duo previously worked together on tracks like “Green Lights” and “All Mine” from her debut album, 33.
“Shooting ‘Two to Tango’ was truly a joy,” detailed the multihyphenate to VIBE exclusively.
“I remember when first writing the song, I was dealing with a multitude of things in regard to the industry and how I was trying to juggle both acting and music. It was as if the yin and the yang of me were tugging at each other, trying to figure out how to balance it all at once. How I incorporated that in the music video was color juxtapositions, art style differences, and performance to try to showcase both sides of Michaela Jaé. I feel like there’s so much more to go when it comes to my art, but this just another ever-growing piece of it!”
Her aforementioned debut project was officially released last year, and examines themes of self-discovery and resilience through the eyes of a cloned humanoid woman navigating an alien planet with each song representing a different stage in the epic journey.
The New Jersey native made history as the first trans woman to receive a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her role as “Blanca” on FX’s Pose, which also won her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in 2022. Up next, she has landed a role in season 3 of Apple TV’s comedy series Loot alongside Maya Rudolph.
In addition, Michaela Jaé starred on the latest season of FX’s “American Horror Story,” titled “Delicate.”
