Muni Long recently addressed the controversy surrounding her personality in a six-minute TikTok, and responded directly to a TikTok user who called her out over remarks about “only Black women” not liking her demeanor.
It all kicked off when a fan in Long’s TikTok Live chat trolled her, moving the Grammy-winning singer to respond in a video with: “It’s only ever Black women that say they don’t like my personality. I’m being myself, I’m acting just like your raggedly mommy and your aunties. With them ashy cankles. This is how they act, but something wrong with my personality? Take a look in the mirror h*e, you don’t like you.”
Her words, however, didn’t sit well with everybody.
After her remarks went viral, Long found herself doubling down on her stance in response to a video made by a TikTok user named NeverStopWithShari. Shari reminded Muni that Black women were the ones who made her viral hit “Hrs & Hrs” a chart-climbing anthem.
“Muni Long was on her live today and let it be known that it’s only Black women that don’t like her,” the woman said. “I think it was only Black women that supported you too. Nobody liked ‘Hours and Hours’ and all these songs until we liked it.” She also warned Long to “watch what she says” when speaking on Black women. That’s when the singer-songwriter logged back onto TikTok with a clapback that ignited the controversy even more.
“The first question that I have for you, Ms. Shari, is … you said ‘you better watch what you say’ or what?” Long asked, getting straight to the point. “I know I look young because I drink water and mind my business, but I’m 36 years old. I’ll be 37 in September. I’ve been grown and taking care of myself for a long time. Nobody will talk to me like that.”
She concluded with, “Black women it is okay to speak your mind and take up space, for you to assert yourself, for you to be kind instead of nice, for you not to keep taking the shirt off your back and giving it to the next man. You ain’t mammy. We don’t have to raise the world.”
Long’s word, although positive, seemed to be conflicting to some as many felt she missed the message that the TikToker was trying to get across.
“Did she…. completely miss the point of what the TikToker was saying? Like completely??” one Instagram user asked, as another commented, “I personally think she should address the ppl hating on her and NOT “black women” as a whole.” A third person wrote, “Not her biting the hand that LITERALLY put her where she is. Her breakout song was made viral by the same women she claims hate her. Welp.”
A fourth person seemed to side with Long. “That’s her experience, who are we to judge??? Are you one of the ones she is talking about. Why are you taking on that..I’m confused,” they wrote.
