This year’s ceremony, themed “Crowning Greatness,” showcased the undeniable dominance and evolution of SA hip hop, with artists pushing boundaries and setting new standards.

🔥 Song of the Year:

Emerging as the anthem of the year, “Skuta Baba (Remix)” captivated audiences nationwide. This powerhouse collaboration brought together both rising stars and industry heavyweights, resulting in a track that resonated across dance floors and social media platforms alike. The song’s infectious energy and dynamic beats solidified its place at the top of the charts.

Best Viral Challenge:

“Skuta Baba” not only dominated the airwaves but also sparked a viral dance challenge that took social media by storm. From TikTok to Instagram, fans showcased their moves, turning the track into a cultural phenomenon and earning it the Best Viral Challenge award.

Best Male Artist: Usimamane

Usimamane’s meteoric rise in the hip hop scene was recognized as he clinched the Best Male Artist award. His debut album, “20th: Days Before Maud,” showcased his lyrical prowess and storytelling ability, resonating with fans and critics alike. Tracks like “Cheque” and “Uvalo” became anthems, reflecting his unique voice and perspective.

Best Produced Album: DIY 3

 – Emtee

Emtee’s “DIY 3” stood out for its impeccable production and authentic storytelling. The album’s blend of raw emotion and polished beats demonstrated Emtee’s growth as an artist and producer, earning him the Best Produced Album accolade.

🎤 Best Hip Hop Song:

Too Much

 – SkhandaWorld, K.O & Nasty C

“Too Much” by SkhandaWorld, featuring K.O and Nasty C, was a testament to the power of collaboration in hip hop. The track’s compelling lyrics and infectious rhythm made it a standout, securing its place as the Best Hip Hop Song of the year.

The last time a South African hip hop song won the Song of the Year at the Metro FM Music Awards was in 2017, when Nasty C clinched the title with his breakout hit “Hell Naw”. This track resonated deeply with fans, marking a significant moment for SA hip hop on a mainstream platform.

Since then, the award has predominantly been awarded to artists from other genres. For instance, in 2023, the award went to Betusile Mcinga for the gospel hit “Ngena Noah”, and in 2024, it was claimed by Kabza De Small & Mthunzi for their amapiano anthem “Imithandazo”.

However, in a remarkable turn of events, hip hop made a triumphant return in 2025, with Woodblock DJs and a stellar lineup of collaborators—including Buzzi Lee, Kane Keid, Cassper Nyovest, Kwesta, Tony Dayimane, Mvelost, Set Off, and Somololo—securing the Song of the Year award for the “Skuta Baba (Remix)”. This victory not only breaks an eight-year hiatus for hip hop in this category but also underscores the genre’s enduring influence and adaptability within South Africa’s dynamic music landscape.

The win serves as a testament to the collaborative spirit and innovation within the SA hip hop community, signaling a vibrant resurgence and a promising future for the genre on major award platforms.

The 2025 Metro FM Music Awards highlighted the dynamic and evolving landscape of South African hip hop. From viral sensations to groundbreaking albums, the evening celebrated artists who are not only shaping the music industry but also influencing culture and inspiring the next generation.
