The Durban Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to two of the five men accused of the murders of renowned rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and celebrated chef Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. In delivering her ruling, Magistrate Thandeka Ndlovu said:

“Looking at the totality of evidence, which is the findings of this court, this court cannot and should not assist the applicant. The facts presented before this court are either not new or they should not be entertained for the applicant to be released on bail.”

The decision comes after weeks of intense courtroom proceedings, where the accused sought to convince the court that they posed no flight risk and should be released on bail. However, the magistrate found the arguments unconvincing, citing a lack of compelling new evidence or circumstances to justify their release.

AKA and Tibz were gunned down on February 10, 2023, outside a popular restaurant on Durban’s Florida Road. The pair had been enjoying an evening out when they were ambushed by gunmen in a shocking act of violence that sent shockwaves across South Africa and the global entertainment industry.

Video footage of the incident, which showed the chilling moment when AKA was fatally shot at close range, sparked widespread outrage and calls for swift justice. Tibz, a close friend and former manager of AKA, was caught in the crossfire and tragically lost his life.

The denial of bail is poised to be welcomed by many who see it as a step towards ensuring accountability for the heinous crime. AKA fans have not lost the momentum to echo #JusticeForAKA and #JusticeForTibz. As the case progresses, attention remains firmly fixed on the judicial process. The remaining suspects, who are still in custody, will continue to face scrutiny as the investigation unfolds.
